Thanks to the expert help of Gunde on the LHC forums, I was able to solve a problem with VirtualBox (any version). It does not work with BOINC 7.16.14, which I obtained from PPA costamagnagianfranco and was running on an Ubuntu 20.04.1 machine.
Basically, if you have that PPA version, you go to Ubuntu "software and update" and uncheck the line for that PPA then:
sudo apt remove boinc-client boinc-manager
sudo apt install boinc-client boinc-manager
That will install BOINC from the apt repository.
In the case of Ubuntu 20.04.1, it will be BOINC 7.16.6.
In the case of Ubuntu 18.04.5, it will be BOINC 7.9.3.
Either works with VirtualBox.

I don't know if this is applicable, but I have boinc version 7.16.17. I noticed my Virtualbox wasn't showing up either. I haven't tested any work yet, but I added user boinc to groups vboxusers and vboxguests. After a restart of boinc, Virtualbox is showing up on the computer details again.
Beware the dual headed Gentoo with Wine!
