It seems like every Cosmology@home WU stops, produces the "VM job unmanageable" message, and then some time later (a day or two) starts up again and completes normally. About 50% of my original jobs were failing early, or late -sometimes with seconds to run. Talk about frustrating! I was using F@H on GPU utitlising the excees single core [of 4] on my machine and thought this was causing issues. This may have been contributing -but stopping that didn't stop the problem & neither did not using the EFMER Boinc Tasks utility, I prefer for Boinc work. I thought they may have cuased comms clashes. This actually has a stop client in the menu, too-as well as 'Reporting Tasks done' prompt to see latest results through. Much more user friendly. I now find this works no worse than official Boinc manager- with the added colour highlighting making jobs much easier to trace. Getting the VM to start has also cuased issues with cycling of old work . It seems the VM can be triggered to reload -and run unattached to the Manager if they miss synch. Returning the VM Service to manual had to be done a lot- but once I learnt to keep the Task Manager going, check VM box state and resist restarting manually, work completes with the usual failure rate and then I just rerstart the Client to attach the old work which picks up from the old leftover listing. I'm going to try Autio start with PC boot to see if this improves matter. It's not a high overhead. Strangely, this success seems to have registered somewhere - as the postponed work no longer carries the 24 hour hold on restart!! This seems a poor way to carry out work- but perhaps resources are cheap? There's no shortage of work, so I'm persisting a while with this project due to liking a technical challenge :) ID: 22876 · Reply Quote

Had the last 4 hours 8 Tasks with 3 CPU's in Virtualbox 6.1.12. less than 10 errored out with postponed. Killed them in Virtualbox-panel and deleted manually the Boinc-VM. It is not a very good solution. Therefore have two PC's with Virtualbox 5.2.44 and running well atm. I have another machine running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, Boinc, and VirtualBox without issue. Even the machine running Solus, Boinc, and the same VirtualBox doesn't have issues. That one is assigning 4 cpu cores to a work unit or VM. You need to get it to assign 1 to 2 cores, probably by using the app_config.xml method or set the project preferences of Max # CPUs to 1 or 2. app_config.xml is shown in the FAQ section. Less than three days old. There was nothing carried over from the previous OS. If what you are saying is true, this is a problem much further upstream, at the project level itself. The 5820k is a Boinc only computer without any other workload than Boinctask-Client. Rebooting the 5820k with ubuntu 20.04 LTS work fine even with 100% Vbox Load (which is overload because of Vbox overhead). This shows that it is a vbox Problem with Windows because the 5820k hardware is the same. All my Computers have enough Ram (32GB for 8/6 Core and 64Gb for 12/16 Core) Boinc / Vbox get an extra SSD (to avoid TBW problems on boot SSD) Your Applikation is not the only one, Quchempedia makes the same problems The acceptance for Vbox Solutions depends on error quality and actual no one will run this Software out of a Formula Boinc Race. csbyseti ID: 22907 · Reply Quote
